🌿 Maurice Avenue Reimagined: Mallacoota’s Streetscape Upgrade Now Complete

Mallacoota’s town centre has a fresh new face — and it’s looking fantastic.

Captured in vibrant winter sunlight, this latest drone imagery shows Maurice Avenue transformed into a safer, greener, and more inviting space. With the major works now complete, the Mallacoota Streetscape Upgrade stands as a key milestone in the community’s recovery and future vision.

What began as part of Victoria’s Disaster Recovery Plan has evolved into a project rooted deeply in local voices, values, and landscapes. Guided by East Gippsland Shire Council and delivered with input from a diverse local Project Reference Group, the $2 million upgrade has reshaped the town’s main street while preserving its unique coastal charm.

🛠 What’s Changed?

From the air, the changes are easy to spot — and even more impressive at street level:

  • Wider footpaths and smoother connections improve accessibility for everyone
  • Raised pedestrian crossings and traffic calming promote safety and walkability
  • Native landscaping and retained trees maintain the green, village feel
  • New street furniture and seating areas bring comfort and usability
  • Improved car parking, including four disabled spaces and an EV charging bay
  • Importantly, there's been no loss in parking — in fact, Maurice Avenue gained two additional bays!

Nearby Greer Street now features an extra 11 parking spaces and a striking EV charging station adorned with local artwork — a collaboration with the Croajingolong Centre for Communications and the Arts that adds cultural richness to the functionality.

🤝 Designed With and For the Community

This wasn’t just a construction project — it was a community-led transformation.

Local input helped guide everything from tree preservation and paving textures to the types of plants used in landscaping. The rotunda, commemorative bricks, mosaics, and established gums were all protected by community request.

The results? A streetscape that feels lived-in, loved, and unmistakably Mallacoota.

🎨 Still to Come…

There’s more beauty on the way. Public artworks celebrating Mallacoota’s landscape, stories, and spirit will soon be installed throughout the new streetscape — continuing the upgrade’s celebration of local identity and creativity.

📍 Come Take a Look

With the last of the contractors now gone and final line markings on the way, Maurice Avenue is open, accessible, and better than ever.

Come down, grab a coffee, park with ease, and enjoy a stroll through a town centre designed for everyone — locals and visitors alike.

Project delivered by East Gippsland Shire Council, with support from the Australian Government’s Community Development Grants Program, the Victorian Government’s Tiny Towns Fund, and the Council’s Capital Works budget.
