Lake View Hotel, Mallacoota East: Bringing an Old Photograph to Life
This remarkable old photograph shows a group gathered outside the Lake View Hotel at Mallacoota East, offering a glimpse of life in Mallacoota when the district was still remote and travel was difficult.
Alongside the original black-and-white photograph, I have created a high-resolution AI reimagining of the scene. The aim was not to replace the original, but to make it easier to connect with the people, clothing, building and everyday details captured in the photograph.
The original and the AI reimagining
The colour image should not be regarded as a restored historical photograph. It is an interpretation created from the original using artificial intelligence.
AI can reconstruct detail, add colour and improve apparent resolution, but in doing so it also makes choices. The colours of the dresses, timber, roof and other objects are inferred rather than known. Facial details may also differ from the people in the original photograph.
In fact, this goes beyond simple colourisation. Some fine detail has necessarily been reconstructed or reimagined, so the original photograph remains the historical record. The new version is better thought of as an attempt to show what the scene might have looked like to somebody standing there at the time.
Dating the photograph
There are several clues suggesting the photograph dates from around the late 1890s or early 1900s. The women's clothing, particularly the prominent sleeves, and the design of the bicycle are consistent with that period.
Without a firmly dated source, however, this should be treated as an approximate date rather than a certainty.
Getting to Mallacoota
A contemporary description of the journey gives some idea of just how isolated Mallacoota was:
"The track is plain, and the miles are marked on trees... Two miles further a bridle track turns to the left which leads to Genoa, eight miles distant, but the Mallacoota road goes straight on. At the inlet the horses can be paddocked and a boat taken across to Dorron's Hotel. It is located at the point on high land."
It is difficult today, when Mallacoota is connected by sealed roads and modern communications, to imagine arriving by bridle track, leaving the horses at the inlet and completing the journey by boat.
Photographs such as this are valuable because they put people back into the history. The hotel is interesting, but so are the bicycle, the clothes, the chairs on the verandah and, most importantly, the individuals who stopped long enough to be photographed more than a century ago.
