A Morning Where Sky and Sea Had Something to Say

East Gippsland, Music

This morning in Mallacoota, just before 6:30am, I watched something quietly magical unfold. As the sun crested the eastern horizon, the Full Moon was slipping behind a veil of cloud to the west. A rare celestial overlap — and the start of what turned into a picture-perfect autumn day.

We’re now past the equinox, and in this part of East Gippsland, that means the sun rises just north of Gabo Island. You’ll hear locals pronounce it GAY-bo, and this morning, the golden light touched its silhouette as fishing boats streamed out from the freshly dredged Mallacoota boat ramp.

🎥 Watch the Sunrise Unfold

The sunrise video captures the light shift across the ocean, Bastion Point, and beyond — with birds skimming low and the first two surfers already in the lineup. This is why we wake early.

Shot just after the full moon set, this 360° panorama lets you take in the whole moment: glowing east, fading west, and calm waters in every direction. The stillness is real.

🌕 Why Easter Is “Late” This Year

You might’ve noticed the Full Moon rose last night (April 11) — but Good Friday doesn’t arrive until April 18. Why the delay?

Well, the Church doesn’t follow the real moon. It uses a fixed date called the Paschal Full Moon, which is defined as the first full moon after March 21 according to its own calendar, not actual astronomy.

This year, that lands on April 13. So Easter Sunday is pegged to the following Sunday — April 20.

That’s why, even though the sky says “Easter’s here,” the calendar tells us to wait.

🎶 New Song: "Easter Moon, Mallacoota Morn"

After filming and shooting, I turned the morning into music.  I wrote and produced an original indie folk duet — blending acoustic guitar, harmonica, fiddle, and double bass with male-female vocals.

The lyrics are drawn straight from the moment: the full moon setting, the sunrise past Gabo, the boats heading out, and the quiet power of the tide.

💬 Final Thoughts

Mallacoota gives you mornings where the sky performs in stereo. The sea, the moon, the sun — all taking turns to light up the day. Whether you're paddling out, casting a line, or just watching it all unfold, you’re part of something bigger.

This was one of those mornings.
